Mark Stemwedel is a Senior Lecturer in the Studio Art Program and the Associate Director of the School of Design at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. He has been teaching courses in painting and drawing since 2008. Mark earned an M.F.A. in Painting from the University of South Dakota and a bachelor’s degree in visual arts from South Dakota State University.
Mark’s studio practice is rooted in contemporary painting. His work explores image, symbols, and abstraction to discover new and unexpected meaning. His paintings have been featured at the Washington Pavilion and IPSO Gallery in Sioux Falls, SD. Additionally, his work has been displayed at the South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings, SD, as well as in numerous national juried exhibitions. He previously received a South Dakota Arts Council Artist Development Grant. In 2023, Mark was awarded the South Dakota Arts Council Artist Fellowship.
